United Waste Management

Project Overview

United Waste Management of Holyoke is proposing a solid waste transfer station adjacent to the City of Holyoke sewage treatment facility and old incinerator.  Trucks will deliver material where it will be loaded onto larger trucks and railroad cars for efficient delivery to recycling and disposal facilities.  Features of the project are as follows:

  • Property zoned for waste management
  • Good highway access and direct rail access close to Route 391 (800’ from off-ramp, 160’ from on-ramp)
  • 22,575 square foot newly constructed building
  • 750 tons per day
  • Environmental controls (Best Management Practices) for air quality (dust, odor, noise) and storm water
  • Material transferred from smaller trucks to larger trucks and railroad cars
  • Loading or Baling of material takes place within building, then rail or truck for disposal or recycling
  • No impact to pedestrian or vehicular safety
  • Very limited traffic impact (approximately 2% or less additional trips per day)
  • Previously site assigned property where a sewage sludge composting facility operated from early 1990’s until 2003
